Dear Livejournal, All my housemates and are now settling into our new house and unpacking rapidly. This means that we have AN EPIC NUMBER of empty, still perfectly usable cardboard boxes to get rid of. We can recycle them if need be but really, most of these have several moves left in them. Please let me know if you want to come and take away our empty boxen. We will be grateful to you for doing so. |

Free comfy blue couch from nonsmoking, no pet home! Free only because it won't fit up the stairs of my apartment. It's in front of 739 broadway. Really comfy, need only a little superglue for one of the arms, but in great shape otherwise. Come before it rains again! |

Loud gunshot-like sounds
Did anyone else hear 7 or 8 loud, sharp gunshot-like sounds a few minutes ago? I hope they were just firecrackers, but I called 911 just in case. I'm at Orchard and Day streets, and had my windows open. |

Raccoons!
Okay. First it was snakes (they seem to have moved on) and now I apparently have a family of raccoons (mom and 3 cubs) living in the back yard, inside the crevasse between neighbors' garages. Just saw them come out at dusk. They've been hunting in my trash barrels (knocked over, bags opened, etc.). While I enjoy watching all kinds of wildlife (yeah, even the snakes), I'm looking for ways to discourage the raccoons from hanging around here since I know they can be aggressive. Ideas, anyone? |

FIGMENT Boston festival POSTPONED to July 28-29; Cambridge River Festival cancelled too

No rain date.Carnaval @ SomerStreets and FossFest, Sunday in East Somerville, noon to 4 pm The Davis Flea market, Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm (first one of the year) |

Ceiling fan installation
We're considering splitting the cost of a ceiling fan in our living room with the landlords (they buy the fan, we get it installed). I know enough to know that we probably have to have a box put in, because there hasn't been a fan there before, but that is pretty much the extent of my expertise. Can anyone recommend an electrician and/or give me an idea what it might cost? We live on the ground floor of a typical Somerville 3 family. Thanks!
ETA: there is already a light there; it's an old school chandelier type light with a dimmer knob on the wall. Thanks for the advice so far. |

We have bike ... markings ...
Wow. My part of Willow Ave. suddenly has not only a center line (double yellow), but at least one bike marking - the share-the-road type, not a line or lane. How much of the rest of the city are they doing? |

Free Moving Boxes and Bins!
I'm moving out today, and have a bunch of boxes and 18 gallon plastic bins that I didn't use. They will be out on the porch of 54 Bay State from 10am today until noon tomorrow, at which point they are trash. Please come take my boxes! Edit: I won't be able to update this post, as our internet service is going away now. I've also put out a three drawer plastic rolling cart, and will be putting out a vacuum cleaner around 11am or so. |

Urban Promise Church is NOT closing
even though it looks that way right now. All of the Urban Promise signage is gone, and the only remaining sign just says "SPACE FOR RENT 617-999-5133". I called the number and talked to the minister, who told me that a non-profit in New Jersey (ETA: I'm guessing this one) had registered the name 'Urban Promise' and sent the church a cease-and-desist letter, forcing them to change their name. They'll probably go back to 'West Somerville Church of the Nazarene' or something similar. So, not to worry, Theatre@First and PMRP are not about to lose their practice and performance space. But they will need to change the church name used in their publicity soon. (For those who don't know what I'm talking about -- this is the church at the southeast corner of Elm and Russell streets.) |

Grounding McGrath Highway meeting Thurs 5.31
Apologies not Davis Square, but important to Somerville's future in general. It looks like we need a large turnout Thursday 5.31 to tell the state/MASS DOT to convert the elevated portions of McGrath Highway to an at grade boulevard. Currently they want to spend $10 million in repairs to extend it's life. This is absurd, as no one wants this ugly piece of concrete in our city. The money should be spent to deelevate it, rather than wasted. If it is spent to extend it's life, you can bet it will not be deelevated for a *long* time. See STEP website for meeting details and more insight on the issue: http://www.somervillestep.org/2012/05/mccarthy_overpa.html |

Tax Advisor Sought for Education Related Advice
So I'm currently in a situation where I might be able to make the finances fall-in place and go to school at Landmark College in VT this Fall. Since they specialize in students with learning disablities, their web site says you can sometimes get a medical deduction as a special education expense and to consult your tax advisor. I don't have a tax advisor. So since I have no freaking clue as to how to even start the search process, I'm asking all you snarkers at home for advice. If you have specific advisors for me to check-out, you need to know I don't drive. If someone's particularly kick-ass, I will take the extra time to commuter rail and Regional Transit Authority out to someone. Especially since the advisor's advice might help me avoid this from being a true statement: College: the fling that lasts 2, 4, 5 years, but costs you a lifetime. http://www.landmark.edu/admissions/tuition-and-financial-aid/making-landmark-affordable/ETA Landmark link. |
